Last year, we had no idea what to expect when we stepped onto the floor at WonderCon. Dressed as Black Canary and Green Arrow, it was one of the most fun days we’ve ever had. Even as we left the Con that day, we were talking about how we couldn’t wait to go back next year. Well, “next year” came so slowly and then so quickly, and now it’s all over! It’s hard to compare the two Cons, but WonderCon 2014 definitely was a blast.
As much as we love our Canary and Arrow cosplay, we were blown away by the level of quality cosplayers that attend WonderCon, and we wanted to do a cosplay that would wow. We had been diligently following Gail Simone’s run on Red Sonja and when Peter, jokingly, suggested that I cosplay the Red-Devil herself, I thought it was just that—a joke. But then the idea grew on me. It was terrifying, of course, (If you happened to read my piece last week, you’ll know why having that much skin exposed seemed out of my league) but I found that I was excited to do it. It would be a huge undertaking—considering we’d be making the majority of the cosplay ourselves, using things we’d never worked with before— but it was also a chance for both of us to start eating healthier, exercising more and learning some new skills!
Miraculously, we were able to get the cosplay finished on time and I’m in love with how it turned out. And when I say miraculously, I really mean that considering we both were juggling work, I was also in school, plus I had to make nearly 3 dozen mason jars for my mom’s 50th birthday during the weeks we had to make the cosplay. Not only that, I woke up the Monday before WonderCon with a fever and was pretty sick the rest of the week. Not great when you need to get things done. Luckily, Peter is incredible with crafts and my best friend Becca even came over to feed us and do some sewing.
I was nervous when Saturday morning finally came, but otherwise excited to show off this culmination of both cosplay accomplishment, and mental and physical change. To be honest, I was most nervous about the harassment horror stories I’ve heard from other cosplayers at other Cons. Stories about people making rude comments or touching them inappropriately, etc. Luckily, I had no such experiences! In fact, all of the attendees and photographers who were nice enough to want to take my picture or take a picture with me, were very polite and respectful. Thank you to all who came up for a picture, it really made my day and we’d definitely love to see/share your photos!
