We went to the Geekie Awards!

It finally happened! The Geekie Awards! We’ve been so excited for the event for months and are still basking in the glow of winning an A-Level award and being nominated for a Best Of award. And yesterday, the big day finally arrived.

Peter was out of town for his cousin’s Bat Mitzvah, so he flew back Sunday morning in order to make it to the show. Emily had a full day of running around getting all done up for the big event.

Emily got her hair done at DryBar and had a great time. They have fancy water there, guys! And she got her makeup done at her local Sephora. It was probably the most makeup she’s ever worn in her whole life, but it was worth it!

When we arrived at the venue for the show, we had to wait in line to get in to do the red carpet. But while we were waiting, we were so fortunate to meet William Meyer of the Fire on the Mound podcast and Alex Wer and his wife of The Pumpkin Geek. His pumpkin carvings are amazing and he ended up winning the Best Of in the craft category!

The venue looked amazing and all of the tables had little 3D printers on them that were printing out rocket ships and robots throughout the show. One of the coolest parts of the venue was that the stage was a replica of the Enterprise bridge from Star Trek: The Next Generation! So awesome!

The first award of the night went to the man himself, Stan Lee. Seth Green presented the award to Stan and gave a great speech about how great he really is. Stan’s lasting legacy is that he created characters that were just regular people called to action to do extraordinary things. He was never afraid to create a strong female character and he was never afraid to address about controversial or important issues like 9/11 and gay marriage in Marvel comics.

Stan, for his part, seemed very excited to receive the award and even wrote a song about being a geek! And he sang it! Best part of the night by far.

The show itself was very fun and enjoyable with a lot of great presenters and video clips. We were lucky enough to sit at a table with some of our fellow nominees, All Geek to Me and Have You Nerd. Emily was really happy to note that they were all women! Such a great thing to see and to connect with like minded individuals.

After our category was announced, we all lovingly called our table “The Losers Table” since none of us won. Congrats to the guys from The Nerd Machine on their win, however!

After the show, we headed up to the after party to have some drinks and hang out. We were so happy to run into the talented America Young, Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt. We met them at the Gam3rCon voice-over panel and they remembered us! Platt was actually the ship’s computer voice you heard throughout the show! We also saw Cas Anvar, the voice of Altier in the Assassin’s Creed games, who we met at WonderCon.

On our way out, we met Clare Kramer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Bring It On fame. Fun fact: she told us that she was 7 months pregnant! We could not believe it, she was so tiny! She was so gracious and nice, it really was a good end to the night.

We didn’t win, but we’re still so glad that we went! We really hope they have it again next year and we can enter more projects! Thank you to the Geekie Awards!
